What is Sherman Alexies notion of the reality behind a story as this notion is presented in Flight Patterns I specify Sherman s notion of reality is that life is full of contradictions. The society sets up so many rules for people to follow, and people are often judged by their cultural group, gender, religionetc. Accordingly, they have to behave properly in order to meet the expectations. However, in reality not every person can stagger easily with the role he is supposed to be in. For example, William doesnt want to choose between American and Spokane. He loves them both. In religion, he is a generously religious man. In ethnic, he is a Spokane Indian while having in civic life like most American. In the text, it states that William wanted all of it .Hunger was his crime. I think Sherman Alexie points this out to tell us that in reality, a person might feel bemused to make a choice among all he wants. Fikadu faces the difficulties between killing his own people for Selassie and living with his family. William faces the difficulty between jobs and family. They both make up their mind and make the difficult choice condescension feeling uncomfortable. The reality is not perfect as we may consider it. People sometimes have to make sacrifices or compromises to accomplish a bigger task. I think William chooses to believe Fekadus story because no matter it is true or not, it tells the essence of reality in this society.
